From the editor

Over the last 25 years, UNIDO has established Subcontracting and Partnership Exchanges (SPXs) with the objective of helping local enterprises to successfully meet the challenges of globalization and to take advantage of the emerging opportunities that evolve from industrial subcontracting, outsourcing and supply chain opportunities. This original network has provided an information portal for matchmaking suppliers and buyers, and has been effective in dealing with short-term buying contracts on the basis of ‘requests for quotations’. This is the first number of our quarterly newsletter that will be dealing with SPX dynamics in India. We hope this will represent an useful tool for the Indian automotive MSMEs.

1.Subcontracting & Partnership Exchange

(SPX) India was launched in June 2007 in the frame of the “Consolidated Project for SME Development in India”.

SPX programs and centers are part of the “Investment & Technology Transfer Promotion” (ITP) Unit of UNIDO

Focus manufacturing sector of SPX India

Auto components: SPX focuses on the auto component sectors in NCR, Pune and Chennai clusters, as they are amongst the main hubs of the automobile majors in India.

SPX Centers in India

SPX India has started from the manufacturing sectors selected by the Consolidated Project, in coordination with the DC–MSMEs, Govt. of India, for its comprehensive and integrated intervention:

SPX Chennai: The SPX Chennai was established with MSME DI. SPX Chennai centre has profiled over 350 companies in auto components leather and footwear companies in the region, by May 2008. It is located within the MSME-DI premises, Chennai.

SPX Pune: SPX Pune was created in partnership with the Manufacturing excellence division of CII-Confederation of Indian Industries. The SPX Pune centre is located within the CII premises. SPX Pune has profiled about 100 members, till May 2008.

SPX NCR: SPX in the National Capital Region covers the auto component companies in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Gaziabad districts. It has profiled over 250 members.

Geographical Distribution

2009 target for SPX India Program: profiling 1,000 companies.

Profiling the company with the SPX program proved itself to be a formidable tool to: (i) be in direct contact with the companies, (ii) understand their capacities, capabilities, needs, expectations, (iii) ultimately contribute to elaborate a growth strategy for the association’s members.

Distribution of Auto component companies in SPX India

ISO & TS Certified companies in SPX

More than 60 % of the companies in SPX are ISO and or TS certified companies.

Destination of Exports of SPX companiesEurope and North America have been the key export destinations for the SPX companies

2. SPX India will participate in the 2009 edition of EQUIP AUTO from 13th to 18th of October in Paris.

EQUIP AUTO has established itself as a reference meeting place for all those involved in the automotive industry worldwide. Devoted since 1975 to passenger car equipment (PCs) and then to equipment for industrial vehicles (IVs), the show is now opening onto parts and repair equipment intended for all motorized wheeled vehicles.

It is a lever for the development of international trade and an ideal platform for access to the “Euro-Mediterranean” market. It is expected 2,022 direct exhibitors, including 80% international exhibitors organized in 52 overseas pavilions from 25 countries and a high representation from the new centres in the auto industry(Brazil, China, Central and Eastern Europe, India, Russia…).
4. SPX Participation in Equip Auto 2010

SXP India participated with an info point in the International Exhibition Equipe Auto that took place in Paris from the 13th till the 18th of October 2009.

Opened by Christian Estrosi, French Minister for Industry (representing the Minister of the Economy, Industry and Employment), EQUIP AUTO 2009 successfully met the challenge of putting on an exhibition centred on productivity and efficiency against a backdrop of economic crisis. The show which ran at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre recorded an attendance of 91,160 manufacturers and trade professionals and, with international visitors making up 29% of that figure, also confirmed its worldwide appeal.

The majority of the 1,600 exhibitors, 80% of them international, noted a marked increase in their turnover and number of key contacts acquired. EQUIP AUTO continues to fulfil its role as a platform for innovation, having now established itself as a key industry meeting place, particularly in the way it is addressing electro-mobility.

During the exhibition, the SPX staff had the chance of presenting the programme with on line demonstration of the Outsource 2007 Database with custom research available for the visitors.

An overall positive feedback had been shown about the quality of the information displayed and the quantity of companies profiled in the database.

The National SPX Coordinator had the chance to interact with a number of buyers and business association which will be targeted for further promotional activities both in India and abroad.
